1. Measure from the center of the window (or rough opening), and mark the wall 4’ to the left and 4’ to the right of the C/L. See window warning below.

2. The hole should be dug to the marks on the wall (8’ total) and 6’ out from the wall.

3. The top of the well should be approximately 4" above the final grade. This will dictate the depth of the hole.

4. Fill the bottom of the hole with pea stone and level to desired depth. Connections to the drain tile should be done now (if needed).

5. Measure 30" from each side of the C/L of the window and mark on the wall. This marks the inside edge of the well at the top.

6. Emergency egress installations with a well depth greater than 44" require a ladder. The ladder must be installed now. If no ladder is required go to step 10.

7. Drill a 5/16" hole in the approximate center of each ladder mounting boss – two on the top rib and two on the bottom rib.

8. Attach the ladder to the well from the outside using the fasteners provided. Do not cross-thread or over torque.

9. Check that the ladder is firmly attached. The well is now ready to install in the ground

10. Add caulk or sealer tape to the wall side of each flange. Position the well to the approximate width and height using pea gravel or clay as appropriate.

11. Check the 60" inside dimension between the window well sides at the wall and hold in position before drilling the mounting holes.

12. Attach the well to the wall with five concrete fasteners (evenly spaced) on each flange. Backfill with pea stone or sand. See Backfill warnings below.

Window Warning: Casement windows will not open in installations where the optional grill is used and the top of the window is above the top of the window well. A sliding window is recommended for most basement egress system installations.

Backfill Warning #1: Backfilling with chunks of clay or large rocks can cause localized buckling. This will not harm the well but it will result in an undesirable appearance.

Backfill Warning #2: The Habitech egress window well is made of high-density polyethylene material which is extremely tough but a backhoe or front end loader can damage the well if care is not taken.

Downspout Outlet Warning: Gutter downspout openings must be at least 6’ from the sides of the window well and directed to a well-drained area. Improper drainage can cause any window well to cave in during torrential rains. If excessive water accumulation is expected around the window well, perforated drain tile should be installed around the exterior of the well wall to drain the water away from the well and the foundation.
